Spring 2026
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Romelia Gomez shares how a parent and caregiver can apply discipline tactics that lead to a more positive parenting approach.
She starts by describing that "discipline" isn't punishment but instructive action that is teaching them a more positive behavior and transmitting cultural values.
To better understand what needs to be taught, parents and caregivers shouldn't react to the behavior that is demonstrated but tune into the need that is driving it. Kids and teens often act out because they're overwhelmed, tired, hungry, over stimulated, or needing connection. When the response is to the need, the behavior natually softens.
Romelia suggests applying a simple structure to help during the moment:
-
Observation
-
Naming the feeling or need
-
Offer guidance or connection
A simple example using the above structure
Child: I don't want to do my homework!
Parent: Sounds like you're tired and your brain nees a break. Let's rest for 10 minutes, then we'll start together.
A group exercise is provided to help practice these new skills.
