Fall 2024
Associate Marriage and Family Therapist Evelyng Cohen, begins this seminar describing the eight psychosocial developmental stages for all children.
She then shares that mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own activities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Parents and caregivers influence mental heal through parenting goals, parenting style (emotional climate within the family), and parenting practices (the behaviors).
One key aspect of creating a child's resilience is through conflict resolution. While there are many conflict resolution styles, they involve several important elements:
-
Help everyone involved in the conflict identify and label their emotions, so they can understand their feelings
-
The problem is the problem, not the person. Communicate effectively by using/modeling respectful communication by expressing needs and active listening
-
Work together to choose solutions by gathering information and developing multiple positive solutions
-
Repair the relationship and Reflect by teaching children to apologize and then praise their efforts
